Large antique wood and metal flax carding, or Hetchel, tool. I don't know how old it is---I think maybe very early to mid 1800's? I'd love to know so if you have a better idea, let me know and I'll pass the info on. I cannot find a maker's name on it but I don't think its a homemade item as it is too well crafted. Look at how regular the pins are for instance or the qulity of the woodwork. If it was a homemade tool, it was an exceptional person who made it! The overall size is about 22 inches long by 8 inches wide by 6 inches to the top of the metal points. I believe the 1 1/2 inch thick wood piece is made of hard maple or maybe chestnut--the edges are nicely chamfered. There are 11 rows of 6 triangular metal pointed pins and 10 rows of 5 pins each (two rows were cut off at some point)--one pin is broken in half. The entire assembly is securely held together with a wrought iron bolt on each end--the trhreaded end has a large flat thin nut with the protruding end peened over to keep the nut from loosening. There is a hole on end end, no doubt to hang it up when finished being used. The overall condition is very good--yes the wood is checked and there are pins missing/one broken, and the surface does have wear/stains but I don't see any worm holes.
